“The thyroid gland is butterfly shaped endocrine organ that sits and wraps around the trachea.
It produces three main hormone T3 and T4 important in metabolism and calcitonin in calcium homeostasis. The thyroid has two main loves the right and left. Anteriorly the thyroid glands are joined by the Isthmus. Posteriorly the thyroid gland encircles the tracheal rings but does not connect. From this dorsal view we can see 4 parathyroid glands sitting on the thyroid gland, 2 on each side.

Developmentally, the thyroid isthmus can give rise to a structure contiguous called the pyramidal lobe, which extends upward. The pyramidal love is common up to 55% and is a result of the persistent remnant of the thyroglossal duct.

The functional unit of the thyroid gland is the follicle. The follicles are made up of a central cavity filled with a sticky fluid called colloid. Surrounded by a wall of epithelial follicle cells, the colloid is the center of thyroid hormone production. Surrounding the follicles are capillaries. Follicular cells produce the classical thyroid hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine. The production of these hormones in the colloid rely on iodine.”

How Dangerous is Thyroid Cancer | UCLA Endocrine Center

diseases No Comments »

Most people have a type of thyroid cancer that’s slow growing, treatable and curable, says endocrine surgeon Avital Harari, MD. Prognosis depends on the type of thyroid cancer, how far it has spread and your age. Younger age is better — with most thyroid cancers, you can’t present with an advanced stage if you’re under 55 years old.

To determine how dangerous the thyroid cancer is, you need to know whether it has spread to other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes. A neck ultrasound can identify any spreading, and treatment is often successful even when cancers have spread to the lymph nodes.

For the best thyroid cancer outcomes, your health care team should treat the thyroid and any lymph nodes involved. This usually includes having surgery to remove half or all the thyroid gland.

A small number of thyroid cancers are more aggressive than others — they may spread faster and have worse outcomes. There are treatments available at UCLA Health for later staged, more aggressive types.

No matter the type or stage of thyroid cancer, treatment is crucial. Follow-up after treatment for all patients with thyroid cancer is important since it can come back. If you have questions about your unique cancer, talk to your surgeon and endocrinologist.

Thyroid: Symptoms, Causes & Diagnosis - Max Hospital

In this video, Dr Anjana Bhan, Senior Consultant at Max Hospital Panchsheel Park explains what thyroid is and what its symptoms, causes and methods of diagnosis. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck and is governed by the pituitary gland, which is the master gland in the brain. The pituitary gland secretes TSH which produces T3 & T4 hormones. It also controls a lot of body functions, such as reproductive functions, energy levels, metabolism, lipid levels etc. According to Dr Anjana, there can be many problems related to thyroid but the most common and prevalent one is the underactive thyroid which called hypothyroidism, in which T3 and T4 are less and TSH is high.
